Why Your Skin Barrier Matters

Most of what we call “sensitive skin” is a barrier asking for less, not more. The stratum corneum is a brick-and-mortar wall of corneocytes and lipids. When that mortar thins — from over-exfoliating, hard water, or a winter indoor-heating habit — water leaves and irritants come in.
You feel it as tightness after cleansing, makeup that clings to dry patches, or a mysterious flush that no serum seems to fix. The instinct is to add another active. The better move is to stop poking the wall and start rebuilding it.
A barrier-first routine is almost boring, which is why it works: a low-foam cleanse, a humectant essence, a ceramide cream, and sunscreen. Actives like vitamin C or bakuchiol can return once stinging stops. Lumière and Nuit were written for this exact sequence.
Give it two weeks. Skin that is not busy defending itself has room to look like itself again.
